COLIN Fowler

He began his musical study at the age of five in Kansas City and went on to study piano and organ at the Interlochen Arts Academy. He continued his education at The Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Music in 2003 and his Master of Music in 2005.  While at Juilliard, he studied piano with Abbey Simon, organ with Gerre Hancock and Paul Jacobs, harpsichord with Lionel Party, and conducting with James dePriest and Judith Clurman.

Colin has collaborated with the Mark Morris Dance Group since 2005 and has been their Music Director since 2013. Hailed by the New York Times as “invaluable” and “central to Morris’ music,” he has performed over 50 pieces with the company on almost every keyboard instrument possible, including the harmonium and toy piano, and has conducted performances of Mozart DancesAcis and Galatea, and The Hard Nut.

A versatile musician and conductor, Colin works in many areas of the music scene in New York City. He is a veteran of numerous Broadway shows, including the Tony Award winning musicals 42nd Street, In the Heights, and Jersey Boys. A seasoned church musician, he has previously served as the Music Director at the Park Avenue Synagogue and Calvary Baptist Church, and has led and conducted services at Trinity Wall Street, St. Thomas Church, Church of the Resurrection, and Marble Collegiate Church. As a classical soloist and collaborative artist, he has performed and recorded with many world-renowned musicians and ensembles, including Deborah Voigt, the American Brass Quintet, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Fowler is a sought-after conductor, having conducted many ensembles across the US, including The Knights, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Mark Morris Music Ensemble, and Silkroad Ensemble, as well as collaborated with artists such as Emmanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Inon Barnatan, and Anton Nel.

Recently he has become an in demand video editor following the premiere of Mark Morris’ ‘Videodances’. These were four new premieres choreographed by Mark Morris with both audio and video edited by Fowler. In addition to his editing work, he has arranged music for multiple films, most recently Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed Little Women. He is currently arranging a Mozart Concerto for Chamber ensemble to be premiered in 2021 with the Mark Morris Dance Group and Music Ensemble.
